eBook Description: Melcion, an antidepressant developed by a large pharmaceutical company is found to produce a deadly side effect. This discovery sets off a chain reaction of murder and revenge in Cape May, a quaint, Victorian town on the Jersey seashore. Reminiscent of Victorian London, it provides the perfect setting for a disturbed, young man, who roams the foggy, gaslit streets searching for the meaning of voices in his mind. The similarity of three murders in the area brings the FBI into the case. Special Agent Ryan Berrigan meets Dr. Maggie Emory, the brilliant scientist who discovered the deadly potential of Melcion and, inadvertently, was the cause of Dr. Hoffman's dismissal. Maggie and Ryan work together to solve the murders, but almost lose their lives in a bizarre confrontation in a deserted house on the Jersey Pine Barrens.

CHAPTER 1 It was early spring in Cape May, NJ, and the streets were busy with growing crowds of tourists, perhaps pilgrims is a better term, come to travel back in time. The town was listed as a National Historic Site, and there were more than 700 houses restored to their 19th century Victorian elegance. The effect of having been transported to Victorian London was enhanced by the gas-fueled street lamps and the horse-drawn carriages-for-hire meandering along the narrow streets. The only thing that diminished the illusion was the Atlantic Ocean, defining the city's eastern border. Actually, the sea contributed a special effect which more than made up for its inappropriate presence. During changes in seasons, there was a significant difference between the temperature of the land and the warmer, moist air blowing in from the ocean. The moisture condensed into a thick, rolling fog creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the stage setting for a revival of Gaslight. Mason Cable stood under a gas lamp and inhaled the fog. He watched three girls in their late teens passing, barely visible on the other side of the street. They were loud, and obviously, had too much to drink. He watched them closely; he had a decision to make. One of them, a redhead with frizzy hair tied up in colored ribbons, saw him and walked over. She glanced quickly up and down the street then back to her friends and laughed. When she was sure she had a few seconds of privacy with the young man in front of her, she pulled up her midi blouse; she wasn't wearing a bra. "See enough, Dickhead?" she screamed. Laughing, she ran back to her companions and disappeared with them into the fog. Mason could hear them laughing for a full minute until their voices faded away. He followed them into the enveloping mist.
