Arrow of Deception * * * *Mitch Sierra sat at his desk and looked out at his hardworking Customer Service Support Unit. Mitch was Air Sterling management--upper management--which meant that he had plenty of time to look. He spent most of that time inside the glass bubble that surrounded his office up on the twenty-seventh floor of the Sterling Building in downtown Chicago, checking out the pretty women. When Mitch first saw the new girl sitting in row 4, seat 12, he knew immediately he'd seen someone special. * * * *"Haswell, sit down," said Mitch. "We've got some urgent business to discuss." Haswell sat in the chair opposite Mitch's desk, and sunk himself deeply into its soft leather. "Row 4, seat 12, right?" said Haswell. "Her name is Artemis." Mitch smiled. "That's what I like about you. You can read my mind." "Your mind is not especially difficult to read when it comes to urgent business like this." A brooding response at best, Mitch noted. Haswell was in a sour mood, and looked tired and overworked, as usual. Mitch stood up, clasped his hands behind his back, and marched to the glass partition that fronted his office. Here, he was every bit as visible as an actor, on stage from nine o'clock in the morning until five at night (or sometimes two or three in the afternoon if he had an early range time at the archery club), so he always wore his finely-tailored, cottony-gray Air Sterling uniform, fresh from the cleaners with nary a wrinkle. His black shoes were polished, his thin necktie cut at a perfect angle down the front of his trim but muscular torso, and his cap lay perched on the edge of his desk, showing off his company wings. He didn't like to wear his cap unless he had to, because his hair was of the thick-wavy-blond variety, a perfect complement to his male features. Mitch knew that the women of Air Sterling wanted him--all women wanted him, come to think of it--but such had been the story of Mitch's life, so he had learned to be selective. His ego was much more gratified knowing that he was wanted by all but had by few.
