Like a sprawling, misshapen, cirrhotic liver the ungainly hulk of Sector Twelve General Hospital pulsated against the misty backdrop of the stars. From its view-ports shone lights that were yellow and puce and soft, gangrenous green, and others (especially in the refectories assigned to e-ts who fed on solar flares) which were a searing actinic blue. In other places there was darkness: behind those areas of opaque metal plating lay sections whose contents were so viciously embarrassing that the eyes of approaching ships' pilots had to be shielded from them. One such compartment of the great spaceborne hospital was the bar of the Physiological Types D to G Staff Social Club, known to Earth-humans as the Diagnosticians' Arms.…
