eBook Description: Police officer Jim Brook knows he isn't being professional, or wise. But when Lora McDaniel absolutely refuses to press charges against her abusive ex-boyfriend, Jim does the only think he can think of--he spirits her away to what he believes will be a safe place at a cottage near an old and forgotten lakeside resort. Unfortunately, he's just exchanged one form of "danger" for another.

Far out beyond the railing, violet-platinum shadows misted hedges and fence rows. Already the wide meadow behind the roadhouse lay dimmed beneath a thickening blanket of indigo and deep-purple shadow. Farther off, belts of woodland had solidified to black, and with the swift approach of night, fireflies had made their appearance. Bobbing and flickering against that silk-and-velvet background, their pinpoints glittered the same brilliant gold as the flames of red-globed candles burning at the center of their table.
"What do you want from me?" A quick flicker of a smile drifted across Jim's mouth, then vanished. Candle flame cast strange, leaping shadows and highlights across the planes of his face, and twin golden pinpoints reflected in his eyes. Lora's stomach did a slow, pleasurable roll. He looked like someone she'd never met before--like someone wild and unpredictable. Like she imagined one of the leather-clad thugs would look, should she ever work up the courage to get close to one. "Why did you bring me here?" she asked, as a shiver of some strange, nervous emotion threaded its way along her spine.
