The Jackbird is hiding in the rafters of the house, belly up, black feathers ruffled, beak picking the mites from its wing pits. Below, the two gentlemen sit by a polished mahogany desk, reading The Miser's will to one another and divvying up his wealth. Their throats are heavy, over-collar, as full as their waistcoated bellies. The first gentleman wears rimless steel-temple spectacles. The second puffs upon a well-worn meerschaum: tobacco Cavendish, medium-priced. Both their suits are achromatic tweed.
"...and thus in the absence of surviving relatives and my only son, Jack," the first gentleman reads, "I allot the following bequeaths: twenty-five pounds to the Christian Orphans' Fund, fourteen pounds to the...." "Get on with it! Get on with it!" the second gentleman grumbles. The first gentleman's eyes squint up and scan to the bottom of the document. "...and the remainder of my estate reverts to the hands of my executors to administer as they see fit."
