"For the Fairest" By Erin Donahoe

Last Night I Saw the Moon Turn Black
The light turned from white to night
The pie in the sky grew dark with fright

And I jumped when I could see
A lone timber wolf glaring at me
His jowls were red as if with blood
His claws sharp, dull as mud

Or was it a she? Begging me to plea
For my life or for a fight
A battle of two species in night's sight
I detested the thought

And thought I ought
To ebb away at a turtle's pace
Far away from the devil's face
My foot stepped back, one step, two

The wolf moved forward to me on cue
I knew it was only a matter of time
Before I would hear the bells of Heaven chime
Another step, slow but sure

The nearing did that silver fur
I stood frozen, wracked with fear
And watched, while hungry death grew near
The wolf bowed on front legs

He had me, I was pegged
My mouth opened, wide and slack
And it was then that I saw the moon turn black
