"Payne is unerring in his depiction of a careless bright guy who means well but has screwed up before, and knows his ass is in a sling big-time. The voice is interesting, the tension high."--Sherwood Smith, Tangent Online (Learn more about Tangent Online, the Internet's leading SF&F short fiction review website)

"I especially liked "Moon Rabbit" by Michael Payne, a story about a courageous little girl and her pet interface."--sfrevu.com

When Kaya learned she was going to live on the Moon, first she was happy, then nervous, then excited, then sad.
She was sad last 'cause that's when Daddy said, "The thing is, punk'in, Mommy has to go up first by herself, and then we can follow her in two months." "Why?" Kaya asked. Mommy put a big hand on Kaya's shoulder the way she did when she was being real serious. "Because Mommy has to be up there to make all the final checks on the air and water before any families can move into Central City." Kaya thought, then said, "I don't need very much water." Daddy put his hand on Kaya's other shoulder. "Two months isn't that long. We'll be up with Mommy before you know it." Then Mommy was packing, kissing Kaya and Daddy, and then she was gone and the days got so slow and empty, Kaya thought two months must've gone by three or four times even though Daddy told her it was just one week. "Is a month longer than a week?" she asked him. "I'm afraid it is, punk'in." Daddy turned away from the dishwasher. "But do you want to see where Mommy is?" He held the back door open, and they went out onto the porch, the Moon coming up big and bright behind the peaks of Saddleback mountain. "Central City's right there where the Moon Rabbit's top paw is." He pointed. "See?" All Kaya saw was black smears. "What Moon Rabbit?" "Well, look." Daddy squatted down next to Kaya. "His ears curve up that way and his paws stretch out there. See?"
