"...leapt right off the page and slapped me around, but good."--Craig W. L. Anderson, Tangent

"Can you take this author's call?" Cindy Jeffries stuck her head in from the next room, waving the portaphone in her hand. "I'm late for lunch, already."
"Sure." Ray smiled and went for his own phone console. He enjoyed talking with authors directly once in a while anyway. "Ray Walters," he said in his deepest voice, "what can I do for you?" "Are you Mr. Walters, Editor of Strange Sorties?" The voice was young, quavering, incredulous. "That's what I said." "Mr. Walters, I can't believe they connected me directly to you." "Happens sometimes. How can I help you?" "Well, I've got a story I wanted to submit to your magazine and--" "Send it in to the address on our masthead, along with an SASE." Jeez, Cindy couldn't handle this herself? "--I wanted to send it via your modem connection," the high pitched voice continued. "But I keep getting gibberish on my screen every time I try to connect to your computer."
