I knew as soon as I walked into the Post Office that I was in for some aggravation. I had just moved into the neighborhood, and I always try to make a connection with someone at the Post Office--after all, writing is my livelihood, and the mail my lifeline. But Manny, the usual guy whose window I'd rushed to these past few weeks, was nowhere to be seen. I had no choice but to wait on a long line for a ditzy blonde who looked like it was her first day on the job.

I held my package in sweaty hands as my turn finally came.

No way she would get this right.

"This is going to England," I said as clearly as possible.

"The content is a book, and I'd like it sent by air parcel." The last part was crucial. A parcel sent by boat could take weeks to arrive. At the same time, the air parcel rate was a lot cheaper than first class airmail--I certainly didn't want to pay 15 bucks to send a book that was selling for $18.95.
