"This author never fails to amaze me with her grasp of history. This is only my second book by Ms. Snodgrass, but each time I feel as if I am experiencing what is happening to the characters. Even though this is a novella, the characters are well drawn, and the plot, while moving at a quicker pace, is thoroughly detailed and so right for this time in history. I would highly recommend reading all three of the novellas in the Out Of The Ashes trilogy; this is an author who will not let you down."--Vivian Outen

"Burrow into the haystacks!"
Tom waited long enough to see his men were safe, then dove into the hay nearest him. Using the chute for covering, he dug deep and waited curled in a tight ball. Footsteps beat against the earth. Orders shouted in German followed. There was another burst of gunfire, a smattering of laughter, and the soldiers moved again. Tom measured every step, then felt his hopes sink when they stopped beside his hiding place. This time there was no warning save the sound of the rifle butt against the man's shoulder. Tom held his breath and waited for the hail of bullets. His child would grow up never knowing him and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it. I love you, Gwen. Never forget that?
