The first stinging blow of bamboo sword hurt more than expected. Another cracked across my chest. I could feel the blood begin its journey down my front, and wondered if this was how the losers died: a thousand small cuts bursting open from the welts, swelling too quickly to hold back blood, bleeding you to death. I did not cry out. Crying didn't matter. There was only one way to pass, and one way to fail. If you died, you failed.
My best friend Dabe screamed in the next room. After two years in the school, this was our lovers leap of sorts. We would die together or be gods. It never occurred to us that only one might fail.
