February 27, 1982

For almost thirty years I've kept my promise to Dr. Weiss. The story I wrote in 1955 was about a madman who for some inexplicable reason had the power to heal people, and whose power drove him to suicide. It was an easy promise to keep, because even with Weiss asserting that he had come from the future to save the world, I still could not bring myself to believe it. So I wrote my story of a madman.

But then, in the 1970s, I came across a name which I thought I'd never hear: Leonard Hayflick. Weiss was for real after all. For most of my life, I put him out of my mind, and to be honest, I probably shouldn't be writing this down even now. I can't publish it. I shouldn't publish it. But I'm dying, of cancer ironically enough, and I need to get the truth put down on paper before I'm no longer able to. Hopefully, I'll remember to burn this before I die.
