The black hole and its glowing accretion disk filled my viewscreen. Like a gaping mouth, it dared me to come close, begging for its meal. An odd image to put on my viewscreen, perhaps, but it calmed me down a lot more than the Championship Dive pre-contest interstellar broadcast I had been watching. Staring directly into the black hole, the quiet peacefulness I imagined inside helped relax me. I knew it was all my imagination, of course, but it worked, as I knew it would. I'd been in this position many times before.
Just as I was in a state of utter relaxation, the radio beeped. I toggled the switch to answer it. "Base One, Carrus here, over," I said, just as I realized that I was incorrect. "Hi, Ilona! It's not Base One." I smiled; leave it to Damon Adlus to figure out a way to hack into the radio system and get in touch. "Hi, Damon. What's down? I can't talk for too long."
