She is sent to America to stay until her latest faux pas is forgotten. Besides running a successful shipping company, Jonathan Drew spies for the British. When his government receives news the French are seeking American support for an uprising in Canada, Jonathan is sent to destroy the operation. Meanwhile, Katherine finds Philadelphia society much more to her liking. She enjoys the freer lifestyle and has no desire to wed. On this point, Jonathan totally agrees with her. "A race between Mr. Jonathan Drew's bays and Miss Katherine Randolph's grays next Saturday at the Randolph's country home at Heartsease," the Honorable Theodore Emerson said. "The starting time is noon. Everyone is invited."
Hearing Theodore announcing the race and the location increased the churning in her stomach. Why hadn't she gone into the garden instead of coming over and joining her friends? Why hadn't she ignored the prodding? Why must she jump into situations without thinking about the consequences? Jonathan's lips grazed against Katherine's ear. His touch started a ripple of pleasure rolling down her neck that almost dispelled her inner torment. "We are committed." His words broke the spell, and his cool voice chilled her to the marrow. Where was the gallant gentleman she had shared a dance with earlier? Since she had accepted the challenge, his attitude had changed. Angry at his turnabout, she lifted her chin. "Are Theodore's terms agreeable to you, sir?" "Most agreeable, sweet Katherine." He took her hand in his and lightly kissed her fingertips. Taking a deep steadying breath, she pushed aside the desires this man raised in her. "Then, we agree." She turned her head and called, "Theodore, you have wagered five hundred pounds on the wrong team. My grays will win by more than three carriage-lengths." Again, Annette pulled on Katherine's sleeve. "What's Wrong?" Katherine said, in less than a pleasant tone. "Your mother." Annette gestured to the ripple in the crowd. All her foreboding multiplied a hundredfold.
