It was Sunday night, and getting very close to dusk. I had pulled desk duty, which basically meant sending out the robots whenever a crime was reported. Desk duty was boring, but it was a lot better than being a followup. Especially given the level of violent crime in the megalopolis of Chicago--or anywhere in the world, for that matter.
I was mostly intent on the many screens in front of me, when out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a bright flash of light. I looked out the blaster-proof windows on the heavy metal doors, but saw nothing unusual in the dark, moonless evening, other than the snow. That's when the old man walked in. He wore a robe and sandals, like a character in a play about ancient times. He looked around, disbelieving, at the screens which monitored the whole city.
