When the summons came from Camelot, Michael, Baron of Segreves was returning from vespers in the company of his wife and retainers. As they left the chapel, they glanced toward the heavens, though they had no reason to; the season was spring, not autumn. But no man or woman of the barony could step under open sky without watching for the Dragon of Segreves.
Hooves ringing like a swordsmith's hammer, a lathered horse burst into the courtyard. Sir Michael's knights drew their swords. The baron saw the heraldric device emblazoned on the horseman's white surcoat, a dragon passant gules, and gestured for his men to put away their weapons. The stranger pulled a letter from his breast, and Sir Michael saw the same heraldric dragon impressed in the wax seal. He accepted the missive. His wife laid her hand on his arm as he broke the seal and unfolded the letter with fumbling fingers.
