Thorstein Eagle-Eyes stood at the prow of Wolf, below the snarling carved wolf's-head which gave the longship its name. Thorstein's blue eyes were narrow and restless, seeking the high sheer walls of the fjord, and the narrow shingle where the ship must make landfall in darkness, and the jagged outlines of icebergs. Jarl Harald Icebeard had taken his men a'viking, and rough seas had delayed their return from fat green Ireland to their home, the northernmost steading in Halogaland, the northernmost region of Norway. In this delay, the sun had set; it would not rise again for three months.
