Victoria moved with the speed of a startled cat, but the pudgy man in the doorway left little room. He caught her as she ducked under his arm. She looked up into blue eyes as startled as hers must have appeared. The cap that hid her hair tumbled off the back of her head, disturbed both by her sleep and the sudden, swinging stop she'd made when he'd caught her arm. A shower of copper-colored curls tumbled down her back. She struggled, kicking at him with small grunts of panic.
"Whoa, lass," he said and grabbed her shoulders. "I won't be hurting you. Stop it." Frantically, past experience having taught her disbelief of those particular words, she kicked again and looked around the outside room for an exit. She saw one that must have been where she'd come in the night before, and another, smaller door set beside the pot-bellied stove. Changing her tactics, she bit the man's hand as it rested on her shoulder. He swore and pushed her bodily back against the doorframe. Victoria stilled, knowing any further struggles might earn more pain than her life was worth.
