"Are you not a man of your word?" I asked, biting the syllables to show my displeasure.
"Few say that I am," answered a strangely familiar voice. "Why do you ask, Lady Catherine?" I spun around so fast that I almost fell into the water from my perch. My heart pounded with fear and surprise. As I lost my balance and felt destined for the water, my visitor sprang from his horse and grabbed me, rescuing me from my fate. "You!" I said, my voice sounding breathless, as my stranger's strong arms effortlessly lifted me from the streambed. His satin shirt felt soft against my arms. A man of wealth and taste. "What are you doing here?" He smiled. "Another question?" He shifted my weight in his arms, settling me more comfortably against his shoulder. I struggled in vain to free myself from in his grasp. He was so close, far too close. During our other meetings I had never felt threatened by his presence, but now--who would save me from him?
