"A TV reporter, his voice colorless, told about Gilly's disappearance and in the background Molly could see her own garage apartment with the pampas grass and sprinkler. The unreality hit Molly with a swift pain to her stomach so wrenching that she put a hand to her waist and breathed in short shallow gasps while listening. This was Gilly they were talking about. Gilly. Missing. On television.
"And there was...film footage taken earlier in the day. Lake Elena right down the road from their apartment....divers, trucks with equipment and clusters of watching people hanging around the edges of the lake. Another reporter, this one with a stiff breeze pulling at his hair, said they were dragging the lake on the off chance they might find the boy. "Molly stood as if she were paralyzed. Surely this was a nightmare. Those men in wet suits and masks, carrying canvas bags and long knives swinging from belts around their waists could not be looking for Gilly. The thought was bizarre. "And then Gilly's image filled the screen. His laughing mouth grinned at them while the chief of police said that a massive search had been launched to discover the whereabouts of this child. They were, at the moment, dragging the lake because three dogs in as many weeks had been killed by alligators in this lake and..." "He went on talking but Molly didn't hear. She was in the bathroom, leaning over, trying not to see an image of Gilly in the water with an alligator gliding toward him. She was not even aware that the awful choking, strangling sounds of retching came from her."
