eBook Description: Three women, three worlds. Or rather one woman in three alternative selves, in three alternative worlds: Dr. Ann Lucas, former NASA scientist and present mental patient. In her world Kennedy was never murdered, the space program has gone forward, and she was working on the manned Mars mission when she began having the terrible visions that ruined her life and put her in a fancy mental institution. Mad Jack, one-eyed gunwoman and occasional mercenary; killer of rapists, lover of women. Across the poisoned wasteland left by Nixon's nuclear war, even the toughest marauders respect her--or die. And Jay Younger, known to her readers simply as Jay: science fiction writer and alcoholic, her career and talent wrecked by drink. She lives in our own allegedly real world.... But something impossible is happening, now; the boundaries are breaking down, and they begin finding themselves in one another's worlds. Their lives become a struggle to survive, separately and then together, pursued by frightening not-quite-human beings from yet another world. In the process they find new insights into their own separate and collective identities--as well as a strange and powerful love.

chapter one Dreams again, and she woke screaming. * * * Screaming, she sat up in a tangle of sheets, eyes huge and pupils dilated, hands clawing at the empty air before her. All along the corridor, in other rooms, women stirred in drugged sleep and grumbled wordlessly into their pillows, and down at the desk the night-duty nurses exchanged looks; and after a moment one said, "Ann," and the other nodded and sighed and reached for the sedative tray, and headed down the hallway. * * * Screaming, she jerked upright in bed, shoving aside the fur sleeping robe, one hand groping automatically for the rifle at the bedside, while the naked girl beside her cursed and tried to cover her ears. Nearby, in the tents and shacks of the little village, people listened as the scream echoed off down the hillside; and one of the men playing cards by the all-night fire said, "There goes Mad Jack again," and the others laughed, but not loudly, not loudly at all. * * * Screaming, she rolled over and pushed herself up on one elbow, but then her head imploded in dark-red pain and she fell back onto the pillow and lay staring up into the darkness of the apartment, tasting her own sour breath, hearing and ignoring the thumping against walls and ceiling and the shouted complaints of her neighbors. After a minute she grunted and reached beneath the bed, her hand finding with practiced ease the half-full bottle of bourbon on the floor. * * * In all the worlds, across all the lines, she screamed and woke; and in time, by various means, she slept again.
