"Looks like it's all...Serena?" Glenn's heart leaped into his throat and dissolved into a jerking and choking lump when he saw the white blur of her dress crumpled low in the pitch-dark corner next to the front door. Lying limp and lifeless on the floor in almost exactly the place he'd left her standing no more than five minutes before. "My God, Serena!" He made the rest of the trip down the stairs without really being aware of it...without being completely sure his feet even found all the steps. And he'd leaned over the pale mass in the corner for what seemed a lifetime and a half, his heart now seized solid inside his chest, before he heard a soft sob coming not from that pale spot but from somewhere behind him.

For a minute his heart still refused to beat. Even long after he realized the thing he grappled with so desperately was all dress and no bride.

"I had to get out of that thing," she whispered, her voice even more unsteady than it had been before.

"Jeez, Serena. You scared the living shit..."

"I couldn't s...stand to wear it a m...minute longer."

She sobbed then. Just once, but it was an enormous one. A dry and wracking one that had him reaching for her in the same instant...reaching before he thought about what he was doing.
