I have no body servant, having come in such haste from Astolat. The King, whose eyes are so sad, has assigned a squire to help me prepare for this joust. Though I am a younger son, and though my father is only a minor baron of little wealth, the King has accorded me great courtesy. I thought he would hate me, after the way I made the Queen cry, but he has been most kind.

I am sorry for him, that he must lose his greatest knight today.

* * * *

We did not know who he was, when he rode out of the gold-drenched western sky and came upon the Castle of Astolat. We were surprised by the approach of an unknown rider, for Astolat lies far from the well-beaten thoroughfare, that hard and heralded road which leads to many-towered Camelot. And we have few visitors at Astolat; my father leads a retiring life in these peaceful times, and his fame is a long-dead shade of the distant past.
