At the bottom of the page, Laney gasped at the claimant's name--Emily Carlisle Wilson.
Wilson? The same name as the old widow who, years ago, accused Janeen of stealing a very expensive necklace! She plopped the folder down on the floor and mercilessly rippled through the pages, wildly searching for Janeen's name. She found it--near the back, on a copy of a police report. She checked twice to make sure it was her Janeen, but of course it was.
Thunder grumbled ominously just beyond the window. The sky was growing blacker. Laney knew she should leave soon. With her heart torn, tears stinging her eyes, and legs wobbling, she stood and dropped the file back into the cabinet. She slammed the drawer shut with shaking hands and shoved the file cabinet back against the wall with adrenaline.
The room swam blearily before her wet eyes. She grabbed a tissue from Honey's desk and blotted them. The dark room with the dark furniture enclosed its shadows like menacing arms. A sinister midnight mood spread all around her--like the calm before the storm. What began as a pleasant, happy Monday--a young woman just beginning to fall in love, starting to decorate her new boyfriend's office--would end as more than just a bad day, but also a living nightmare.
Laney slowly closed the front door to the office, peeking back into the reception room--probably for the last time. She didn't knowif she'd be able to follow through with the design job. She didn't know anything at the moment, except total confusion, and that if she didn't get home soon, she would be trapped in the middle of this storm.
