Come on," Tyler yelled, powering through the water with strong, sure strokes.
April tried to emulate him, but her arms and legs were too numb to respond to her frantic request for more speed. Even her lungs refused to work properly; all of her chest and diaphragm muscles were slowing down from the cold. She couldn't get enough air.
Gasping for breath, she miscalculated the position of her head in the water and sucked in a lungful of the salty brine. Coughing and choking, her lungs and nose burning, she moved erratically in the water. Then she went under the surface. Her eyes were wide open, as the dark waves closed over her head.
Terror gave her a spurt of energy. She flailed at the water, now her enemy, but only managed to raise her head above the surface for a moment. Not even long enough for a gulp of life-sustaining air. She went back down. There was a ringing in her head; she couldn't think clearly. Maybe she should just breathe in the alien substance and go peacefully.
As she sank, stars of light began to appear around her. Very pretty, she thought absently, trying to catch one in her hand. But her arms and legs didn't work at all now. They floated lazily, aimlessly around her body. The only sensation left was the powerful, all-consuming urge to breathe.
