The most typical Analog "puzzle" story in this issue is Geoffrey Landis' "Outsider's Chance". Ulysses Ahmed Tabibzadah is owner and crew of Bessie, a creaky old ship hauling oxygen between the asteroids and Earth. The economics of space operations have him right at the edge, barely making it, when he encounters a pirate ship from a breakaway asteroid colony. Losing his cargo will ruin him, but they have the better ship, so it seems there's no hope. Landis weaves together an object lesson on interdependence and the economics of marginal colonies with a cute technical problem story, and resolves both threads nicely. -Rich Horton, Tangent Online (Learn more about Tangent Online, the Internet's leading SF&F short fiction review website)
