The bell of Santa Ysobel stopped ringing at the same time the ringing in Father Ramón Ortiz's head stopped. He had been kneeling at morning prayer when it happened. So startled was he by the instant cessation of pain that he stopped praying in mid-word.

Was this, he wondered, a prayer answered, this sudden relief from pain? It was a blessing, certainly, but did it also signal a miracle? Was he to live, after all, despite his doctor's dire prognosis?

"Two weeks," Dr. Lopez had told him the day before, sympathy making her voice tremble. "Maybe two months. And the pain, the ringing, I'm afraid--" She sighed. It could not be stopped.
