A voice in my head whispers: Her name is Lisa, and she's a very sick little girl... And I find myself sitting on the end of her bed, waiting for her to awaken from her early nap--something she does every day now in the morning and in the afternoon, since coming home from Children's Hospital a week and a half ago. I study her features carefully. Of course her hair hasn't grown back yet, here and there a few reddish strands, and she has that round cherub face characteristic of the disease in children, the skin puffy around her eyes. She is deathly pale, including her bald skull. Her body, in contrast to her face, appears thin and delicate, so frail that a normal childhood spill from a bike would probably break her into a hundred pieces.
