eBook Description: Three years ago, Whittaker Hughes quit his legal practice, sold everything he owned, left his wife and family, and moved to a Pacific island where he counts grains of sand on the beach, one grain at a time, day after day. A sociologist visits him, not to ask why he's doing it, a question others have done, in vain, but to ask why others, around the world, one at a time, are starting to count sand grains too.

Whittaker had neared the two billion mark when the stranger approached him on the beach. "You're Whittaker Hughes, the one counting the sand grains?" The stranger stood between Whittaker and the late morning sun. The stranger stepped to the south, between the ocean and Whittaker. "I'm not interfering with your, uh, work, am I?" Whittaker sighed and looked up at the man, but he kept counting; something he'd learned to do. Count and carry a conversation at the same time.
