The dryad Eliona was dozing peacefully in her tree when the magician barged in to the central trunk without any ceremony whatsoever--not even the simple courtesy of knocking on wood and calling her name. Or, if he didn't know her name, a call to "the spirit of this tree" would have demonstrated a knowledge of the rudiments of manners. After all, the protocol for addressing a dryad wasn't that difficult. And anyone with the slightest claim to magical power knew that one did not enter a dryad's tree uninvited. Coming reluctantly to full wakefulness, she opened her eyes and looked at her uninvited guest. It was the Merlin--who certainly should have known better. The present holder of the title was still a fairly young man, dark haired and slightly built, and one of the most gifted bards of the last three generations. Eliona had always admired him, until now. "Lord Merlin," she said, blinking the sleep out of her eyes. "This is an unexpected honor." At least that sounded better than What are you doing here and why didn't you knock first?
