Sirara watched the old priest examine her son, chanting and mumbling as he searched for signs of the evil spirits that had brought this wasting sickness upon the boy.
"Well?" she prodded, when she could bear the tension no longer. "Can you drive out the demon?" The priest closed his eyes and placed his hand on the boy's forehead. "Lahar is ill, very ill..." Sirara's dark eyes narrowed, anger flowing forth to smother her fear. This gnarled, scented old man was her last hope, for all other cures had failed Lahar; he had grown steadily weaker since the last moon and now lay near death. "You are said to be the wisest healer, the most powerful priest in all of Ur. Can you not cure one small boy who wants to live?" she snapped. Old Sumugan's kohl-rimmed eyes scorched her for speaking to him so disrespectfully. Sirara stared back, openly challenging him; she was qadishtu, a sacred woman of the goddess. As chief priestess of the temple, she consummated the annual ritual marriage with the king to ensure the fertility of the land. A woman of influence and importance, she was wealthy and owned property. A servant and conduit of Inanna, the goddess of love and war, Sirara had no need to bow before this pompous old man.
