The day the cow followed Mr. Griswold into the office was really the turning point. Until that moment, they couldn't prove a thing, no matter what they suspected. But a cow is a pretty noticeable thing on Wall Street, and from the moment Old Betsy started following Mr. Griswold everywhere he went (including the Beefeater Restaurant on New Street, which seemed kind of insensitive to me) our days were numbered.
Betsy's infatuation with Mr. Griswold was simply the result of a careless mistake--exactly the kind of thing I was always afraid would happen. You see, there's a good reason that Mr. Griswold has been the most sought-after bachelor in New York for nearly thirty years, despite being short, fat, bald, and none too charming. He doesn't just use his powers to manipulate events on Wall Street. No, as if that wasn't challenging enough, he also casts love spells on the most beautiful, talented, rich, and celebrated women in the city. The fact that movie stars, rock stars, socialites, models, authoresses, and heiresses have broken their hearts over this squat little guy with the personality of a jackal and the vocabulary of a teamster should have tipped off the entire world years ago--or at least that's what I've always thought. But men have all sorts of cherished illusions about their own sex appeal which are merely confirmed by such an aberration, while women simply shake their heads at the follies of other women.
