Ricky was having an attitude for dessert. That's what Dad said after Ricky turned down a cookie, rejected Jello, then dumped his bowl of ice cream on the floor.
Poor Dad. He really was trying, but he could never handle Ricky the way Mom could. Mom would've known that nobody chooses dessert for Ricky, not even when it's something he really likes. It's not worth pushing the issue. "Go to your room," Dad said. Ricky's face screwed up into that I'll-never-say-I'm-sorry expression that five-year-olds are so good at. "No way. No room. No new house. No stupid ice creeeeeeeeeam!" Dad's knuckles went white. He must've been working real hard not to scream back. He knew that his news wasn't something any of us kids wanted to hear. "Son," he said, kneeling down to be eye level with Ricky. "We can't stay here. My position won't even exist next year, and this was a great job offer. We have to move, and that's all there is to it."
