DECODING THE MEANINGS OF WORDS Recognizing common prefixes, suffixes, and roots of words can be a useful tool in deciphering a word's meaning as well as its part of speech. Take the verb tener. While you should know that it means "to have," it also is the equivalent in English of -tain, as in "entertain." If you begin by identifying a word's root and then determining if a prefix or suffix has been added, you will quickly start to assimilate new words into your active vocabulary. Consider how many new words can be formed just by adding a different prefix to the verb tener: entretener: to entertain mantener: to maintain detener: to detain retener: to retain obtener: to obtain contener: to contain sostener: to sustain abstener: to abstain Words that end in these suffixes are nouns: -ción = -tion: la construcción -ador = -ator: el dictador -encia = -ence, -ency la apariencia, la residencia -fía = -phy: la bibliografía -ismo = -ism: el capitalismo -io = -ium: el medio -dad, -tad = -ty la universidad, la libertad Words that end in these suffixes are adjectives: -oso = -ous: generoso -ivo = -ive: pasivo -cial = -tial: parcial -az = -acious: locuaz -orio = -ory: obligatorio -ente = -ent: evidente Words that end in –mente are adverbs: -mente = -ly: apasionadamente, francamente Additionally, many adverbs in Spanish are formed by adding prepositions (de, con, a) to nouns or adjectives: Copyright © 2004 by Kaplan, Inc.
