Leaves, caught in the breeze, pinwheeled across the grounds of the Academy of Sorcery. Candidate Hennesy had just emerged from the library. As he strode down the ancient stone steps between the pair of massive griffin statues, he was attacked.
The leaves gathered, as if trapped in a whirlwind, and hurtled toward him. They plastered themselves to his body, covering his eyes and mouth and ears, layer upon layer, until he looked like a scarecrow, bright with the reds, golds, and browns of autumn. Across the campus three young initiates dropped their jaws and pointed. Hennesy ripped away the leaves from his mouth and uttered a command of dissolution. The leaves released, most falling to the steps. The remainder he brushed from his shoulders and head. He dug at the stems that had worked their way down his collar. "Ha! Got you!" announced a familiar voice. Hennesy glared as a classmate stepped from behind one of the statues. "Very mature, Dru," he said sarcastically.
