Valiant was deep inside Helvan space when the attack came. Alan heard the alarms and sprinted across the sick bay. Within ten seconds he had strapped himself into one of the exam couches. Three seconds after that the salvo struck.
The entire room jumped. The shock wave flung Alan upward against the straps, then back down again into the couch, knocking the wind out of him. The ship groaned: a deep, metallic cry of pain. They'd been hit. Bad. The lights went out. Alan gasped, struggling to fill his lungs. The sick bay batteries kicked in, restoring power to the med sensors and some to the lights. The room was cast in a dim, melancholy glow. The alarm had gone dead. I'm the only one left, Alan thought suddenly, trying to quiet the fluttering in his belly. Then the intercom blared to life. "Status reports! All stations, report!"
