eBook Description: The Abingdon Worship Annual offers fresh worship planning resources for pastors and worship leaders. The AWA addresses the need worship planners have for ideas for the written and spoken segments of the weekly worship service. At present, Abingdon provides valuables resources for sermon and music planning through The Abingdon Preaching Annual and The United Methodist Music and Worship Planner. However, no ongoing resource exists to provide assistance to pastors and worship planners who must regularly write calls to worship, invocations, prayers and benedictions. Moreover, there is no resource that offers guidance to those who lead contemporary worship services on a weekly basis. The AWA addresses the specific worship-planning needs of these two groups.

January 1, 2006 First Sunday after Christmas Mary J. Scifres Color White Scripture Readings Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Psalm 148; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:22-40 Theme Ideas On the cusp of celebrating Epiphany, light and revelation come to the forefront on this last Sunday of Christmas. Isaiah's proclamation of God's adornments is surely seen in the beautiful garments of Christmas celebrations throughout the world. The psalmist's invitation for the whole earth to sing God's praises reflects our joyous outbursts at the good news of Christmas. But, most of all, Galatians and Luke point to the fullness of salvation that was revealed and realized in Jesus' birth on this earth. Indeed, every fiber of our existence should exult in God (Isaiah 61:1)! Call to Worship (Psalm 148) Hear the angels... praising our God in the highest heavens! See the sun and the moon... shining with the glory of God! Gaze upon the glittering stars...where God's wisdom gleams with pleasure. Listen to the wind and the waves... for they sing of the power of God! Hear the creatures of the deep... praising our God from the darkest waters! See the animals of the earth... singing praise with their mysterious sounds. Gaze upon the majestic mountains... where God's strength stands with dignity. Listen to the storms of fire and rain... cry with the awesomeness of God. Young and old, women and men, sing with the earth. Praise and glory, honor and joy belong to God! Hallelujah for Christ has come! Call to Worship (Isaiah 61) Rejoice in Christ Jesus, the beauty of God. We sing of the One who clothes us with joy. Rejoice in Christ Jesus, the light of salvation. We worship the One who wraps us in grace. Rejoice in Christ Jesus, the hope of new life. We worship the One who blesses us with hope. Rejoice in Christ Jesus, the One who is here. We worship the Christ, God's love in our midst. Contemporary Gathering Words (Christmas, New Year, Isaiah 61) This is a season of hope, a season of grace. This is a day of new beginnings when we celebrate the promise, begun with a child, embraced by a man, and fulfilled in the Christ. As we enter this new year, may this season of hope and grace remain in our hearts and call us to rejoice in the promise of the days ahead. Contemporary Gathering Words (Psalm 148) Praise God with angels and kings. Praise God with the sun and the moon. Praise God with the stars and the heavens. Praise God with the birds and the beasts. Praise God with the storms and the desert. Praise God with the trees and the fields. Praise God with mountains and oceans. Let everything and everyone sing praise to God! Praise Sentences (Christmas, Psalm 148) Christ is born! Hallelujah! Christ is born! Hallelujah! Glory to God in the highest heavens! Glory to God on this earth! Opening Prayer (Galatians 4, Luke 2) Holy and loving God, in the fullness of time, you revealed yourself to us as the Christ Child. Reveal yourself to us again that we may know and trust your promises with the faith and strength of Anna and Simeon. And as Jesus grew in strength and wisdom, so may we grow in the strength and wisdom of your holy Word. Amen. Opening Prayer (New Year, Galatians 4) On this first day of the New Year, breathe upon us with the breath of your Spirit. Fill our hearts with your love and ignite our souls with the fire of your passion. Embrace us as your children that we may embrace this new year as your faithful disciples, servants of love and grace. In your gentle and loving name, we pray, dear Abba! Father! Amen and amen! Closing Prayer (Luke 2) Ruler of our hearts, let us now leave this place in the peace of your love. As we have seen and heard your salvation in this holy season, let us share that life-giving good news with a world yearning for light and life. As your people, we pray. Amen. Benediction (Luke 2) Let us now depart in peace. Let us leave with the light of truth. Let us depart with trust and hope. Let us leave with the faith of children. Let us depart with Christmas joy! Let us leave with Christmas love! Copyright © 2005 by Abingdon Press
