Brandi, my hairdresser, turned me away from the mirror when she cut my hair that morning. I didn't mind. It was tough enough to rehearse my closing arguments, while remembering to punctuate her running commentary on Real Life--on Survivor, that is--with an occasional "Uh-huh," without any other distractions. I put my remarks to her on auto-pilot and just tuned out everything but the words scrolling through my mind, knowing that whatever happened that day would govern the rest of my life.
Then she turned me back to the mirror. "But--but--" I sputtered. "That's not my usual look." "I thought you needed some fun in your life. This is the real you, anyway." The real me? Maybe if I had a Multiple Personality Disorder. "I suppose I can pat it down," I said. Please, tell me I could.
