Chapter One"Storme, Cal wants to know if you can cover for him tonight." Storme Espenshade looked up from the patient chart on her desk and bit back a retort. Her colleague had recently become a single father, and his kids' schedules interfered with the office's established evening hours. The youngest, newest, and least encumbered pediatrician on staff, Storme had become everyone's on-call reserve. She sighed. "Sure. No problem." Ella, the desk manager, shook her head, folded her arms, and leaned against the doorjamb. "It's a problem. You're exhausted. This is what, your fourth late night this week?" Fifth, but who was counting? "It doesn't matter, Ella. I have no reason to go home." Boy, did she sound sorry for herself! She adjusted the loosened clip in her hair and smiled. "Tell Cal I've got it. And you have a good weekend." Ella didn't answer, only stood watching Storme pensively. "Storme, this isn't fair." An emotion long denied began to well in Storme's chest. Mindful of its power, she swallowed to force it back down and held up a hand to forestall Ella's protests. "Life isn't fair, and Cal's kids need to come first." "That's not what I mean. You're so alone!" Tears pricked her eyelids. Horrified, she stood and snapped the file closed. "I'm not alone. I have plenty of friends." "But--" Storme shook her head and the hair clip lost its battle. Dark blond curls cascaded over her shoulders. She dropped the chart onto the desk to pull her hair back up, her movements jerky from her distress. "Ella, please just tell the patient in exam one I'm on my way. Please." Ella started to speak, closed her mouth, and left, a stomp in her step. Storme took a deep breath and held it, her eyes squeezed shut. A voice chanted in her head, repeating all the reasons her life was less than complete. She'd left her family and friends in Oregon almost a year ago. The friend from medical school who'd invited her to New York left the practice a month later to serve in a relief organization in South America. Saddled with the unofficial title of "entryway rug," Storme worked eighty hours a week with no time to develop outside friendships. It didn't matter. She stiffened her spine and picked up the file again. She couldn't change things, not yet. Someday. "Hey, Storme!" The senior partner peeked around the doorjamb. "Nancy needs something donated for her school's bake sale. They're raising money for some kid with cancer. Can you whip up some cookies or something for tomorrow morning?" He aimed a forefinger at her and cocked his thumb, clicking at her like she was a horse. "Thanks." Then, he disappeared. Someday seemed very far away.
