"4 Stars!...One of those rare horror novels; a story that keeps you not quite sure what the ending will be until you get to the last page. This reviewer is one of the loyal X-Files 'crowd,' and Ms. Andre definitely handled the story of El Chupa better than Mulder did. Peopled with interesting characters, from Amber's transvestite friend Will to Doug's puzzle-loving secretary Rachel, the story never loses pace. Events seem to head in one line then veer sharply to the left. Just when you think you've got the whole thing figured out, Ms. Andre throws in another curve ... If you are uncomfortable with graphic violence, this is probably not the book for you. While tastefully handled, Ms. Andre spares nothing as she describes her grisly murder scenes ... A gripping tale of psychological and physical terror, and one this reader will probably read again someday to see what clues were missed the first time through."--RIE, Love Romances
"Cass Andre delivers a horrifying fictional account of a legend come to life. Descriptive writing, suspenseful dialogue, and characters that jump off the page to frighten or mesmerize will intrigue any reader...The story held my intense attention throughout the entire read. The ending blew me away! I very highly recommend El Chupacabra to anyone wishing to submerge into violent 'beastly' depths of horror."--Patricia Spork, ebook Reviews Weekly

CHAPTER 1 The red glow comforted him the way a wedding cake comforted a bulimic bride. He needed it…wanted it…lived for it. Although, unlike the bride, his need had become insatiable. Using a long wooden match, he lit another candle. The wick flamed and entranced him with a hypnotic dance. The liquefying wax brought a smile to his face. Soon… Like the wax his time was melting away. The flame brightened, casting a warped shadow across the lampshade he'd veiled with a red scarf. His eyes widened with pleasure. "El tiempo ha llegado." The time has come. Perception pricked his arms with sharp, aching chills. Three hundred years… Three hundred years of enduring the hell of man consumed him with shame. Disgraced, he hung his head. To be forced to dwell as such a low-life being. Three hundred years of waiting. Planning. Planning for this very moment. Elation lightened his fierce pain. His time had come. "Please…" The cries, a pleasant mixture of desperation and confusion, reiterated his calmness. Though it'd been centuries since he'd heard the whimpers of a human, he recognized his own intense pleasure in it. Their fear had stayed the same. They trembled for the unknown. They dreaded his intent. "I know you," the old man hissed his last stand of courage. "El Chupacabra." Of all the titles he'd earned throughout the never-ending passages of time, he despised that alone. El Chupacabra. He calmed himself with a deep, soothing breath. The time would come soon enough and they would know he was so much more. "Please, lady, let me go," the old man managed between whimpers. El Chupa had never adjusted to being called "lady" either. Or "ma'am." "Miss." He flinched at this own contempt and damned the female body he'd been forced to inhabit. A muffled sound brought his attention back to the present. Copyright © 2003 by Cass Andre
