The shuffle of footsteps outside the door alerted Ruffian. Not Lynn, his person, but a sound of stealth. He barked once, ears pricked forward. He sniffed, but the scent was still outside, beyond the back door. He did a Sheltie twirl and barked again.

A key scraped in the lock, the knob turned, and the door pushed ajar. Ruffian paced back and forth, voicing his fear with a throaty growl.

The door swung open and a man eased inside and shut the door. He paused, gaze darting about, settling on Ruffian.

"Hey, dog. You alone?" the man said.

Ruffian kept up the growling, pacing back and forth just out of reach. The man reeked of lust and rage, but he knelt and extended his hand, smiling.

"Come here." He kept the other hand behind his back.
