Kyra had a bad feeling about this. When the hairs on her neck prickled, she knew trouble lay ahead. She hadn't liked this contact from the start. Well, she wasn't supposed to like him, but she hadn't trusted him as well. Mostly because he wasn't someone she had scouted out. She preferred to be more hands-on when choosing allies outside the Foundation.
If he would just give her the keys, they could get the hell out of there. Macheté kept looking around, like he expected someone. Well, either his friends were late or they were waiting for something. The second part she didn't like at all.
Macheté slowly extended a hand toward her. She could see a key dangling from his fingers. A movement to her left caught her eye just as Jules spoke in a low voice.
"Birthday present on left."
She didn't think Macheté had caught the words. His hair had fallen in even more disarray onto his forehead. His eyes had a cornered look.
Damn, she couldn't draw her gun just yet. She might spook Macheté or their visitor. A lone horn sounded from across the water. Some fisherman coming in late--or the coastguards.
A slight breeze ruffled through her hair, blowing her bangs in her eyes. She tossed her head. Two figures appeared from behind the marina office. She ripped off the short, black skirt with her left hand and grabbed her gun with the right.
"Paul, get behind me." She shoved him to the side and met the first assailant head on. But her foot caught in one of the uneven planks on the walkway.
