Gabriella approached the Grand Ballroom in the company of her unmarried sisters, Maria and Flavia, and her father, Lorenso, the Marquis of Amalfi. The Marquis held Maria's arm, and Gabriella had her arm linked with Flavia's. They stepped onto the broad landing of a sweeping marble staircase and looked out upon the ballroom, a sea of gem-bright colors. Every noble and merchant of Taniria must be at the Prince's Summer Ball. Few looked up, but a ripple passed across the crowd, and Gabriella knew everyone was aware of the arrival of the Family Amalfi.
As they descended the staircase, Gabriella saw a group of six young women standing almost directly below. Their voices rose to her. "Did you see Lady Giuffrida's gown? What an awful shade of orange!" "Ghastly!" One of the young ladies glanced up. Then Gabriella heard a short burst of whispering. All six looked up, then immediately put their heads together again. "So this is the famous Gabriella. Yes, she is handsome!"
