Julian Serrato. Great criminal mastermind of the twenty-first century. They told me, "We want him caught badly. We want you to catch him." They knew nothing. Just the name.
I had a plan. The girl at the hospital desk was pretty and shy. She stared at the sign-in sheet. Her lashes were long. I showed her my badge. I spoke gently. "I'm Agent Child." I nodded at my partner. "This is Agent Bonner." Bonner was big, tough, and uneasy. He said abruptly, "We're here to see Rebecca Courington." We found her sleeping, wrapped up all in white. Her blond hair was carefully arranged. She was strikingly beautiful. A needle was taped to her forearm, connected by a tube to an IV drip. The doctor checked her vitals. "Her brain," Bonner said, "how much damage?"
