CHAPTER ONEDan Shon woke up with a dry taste in his mouth. For a moment he thought he was still in the city of the dead. But he was getting used to that. For weeks now he had been having nightmares. But it was getting better. He knew that with time they would go away. He glanced at the woman in bed with him, experiencing all the emotions that had flooded into being on that distant island so short a time before. It was strange how things had happened. In such a short time his life had changed dramatically. Just a little over two months before... * * * *He had been standing on the porch of his small beach cottage, looking out at the ocean, when her voice broke into his thoughts. "Hi, Dan!" the woman's soft, low voice broke into his thoughts. For a moment he couldn't focus, captured only by the bright, low quality of her greeting. Then he saw the woman and remembered. Ruby West. She was dressed in a flaring skirt and blouse tied around her waist, just under the full curve of her breasts, and it was open at the top. The effect was a sensational showing of the rounded shape of her bust-line. Her face had an inner flush to it, but her whole attitude was slightly reserved. They'd met only a couple of weeks ago. A few nights ago they had almost come to his place.
