When her mother left, Katrisha slipped out of bed, put on her finest dress, and went down into the darkness. At her gesture, sourceless light filled the cellar, revealing the stone walls, the long metal table cluttered with amulets and books and wands, the lectern upon which a book lay open, and the Gate.
The Gate stood in the center of the magic room, a doorframe set in empty space. The posts, lintel, and threshold were all of black metal, and no door hung in the frame. It looked absurd, until the proper magicks were invoked.
Scattered on the tabletop were a score and more of amulets. All were gems, of this World and others. Some amulets were of unknown purpose; from those she recognized, Katrisha selected a smoky quartz stone, set in a golden band which she slipped on her left forefinger. Now she was armed with a potent weapon. She should not need this amulet, but it was best to be prepared.
