CHAPTER--ONE. SUSPICIONMorgaine gazed into the bedroom mirror to see the lovely face of Melody Ellul. She took a brush and vigorously brushed her luxurious auburn hair. She thought, Michael is getting suspicious. He was absolutely dumbfounded by my suggestion to move back into his mansion in Woodstock. A voice in her head that seemed to come from the face in the mirror remarked, "What did you expect, Morgaine? After the tragic events that occurred there, I loath the place. If you want him to believe that you're really me, you must act like me." You're right of course, Melody. But it's necessary for my plans that we go back there. I think I've convinced him though, when I told him that it was the only place to hide the golem. "What are those mysterious plans? Even I, whose body you've usurped, don't know." And you won't. During those times that I allow you the use of your body, I wouldn't want anything to slip to Michael. A masculine voice came from the doorway. "Are you ready, Melody? Henri has loaded our bags in the limo and is waiting." "One minute." Morgaine applied a pale shade of lipstick to Melody's full lips and blotted them with a tissue. She took the stopper off a bottle of expensive perfume and dabbed a few drops behind her ears and between her breasts. "Ready." She rose and faced the tall man with penetrating eyes, short beard and shoulder-length hair tied back into a ponytail. He was dressed casually in a sport shirt open at the collar, designer jeans and a tweed jacket. "Where's Isaac?" she asked. "In a crate. I disassembled it. I thought that it'd be best if it was kept out of sight." "In a crate? You know, he's a thinking being even if he's made of metal, plastic and electronics. You can't just treat him like an old TV set." "I shut it off for the trip. It's in an unconscious state." He took her by the chin and kissed her lightly. "Don't worry. I wouldn't do anything to harm it or make it uncomfortable. By the way, I've located Westcott. Apparently he's got himself together. He's gone through detox, a mental health program and goes to AA every night. So far he's been clean and sober for almost a year." "Did you tell him that we'd like him to come back to the mansion to help us take care of Isaac now that Elizabeth Wolfgang is no longer with us?" "Yes. He's thinking it over. You know, that place holds bad memories for him as well for us. I really don't understand why you want to move back there. Say, is that a new perfume you're wearing?" "Yes. Do you like it?" She smiled at him, anticipating a compliment. "Not really. It reminds me too much of the kind--you know--used to wear. She liked long dangling earrings like the one's you've got on today, too." "Oh. Please Michael, don't be afraid to say her name--Morgaine. She's bound to come up in our conversations sometime, but she's gone now and can no longer harm us." "I'm not so sure of that. I thought that she was out of our lives when she committed suicide, but she returned to earth as a demon." And I'm here now, Morgaine thought. "And still interfering in our lives," remarked Melody in her head. After the couple entered the limousine, Henri drove from their Manhattan apartment to the Major Deegan Expressway heading north.
