The kitchen window was white with light; a thousand invisible hands clapped in unison. Nina tensed. The kitchen was suddenly dark; outside, the wind howled as rain drummed against the window. "What was that?" Andrew shouted from the living room. "I don't know. It sounded like something hit the house." "It had to happen now--bottom of the ninth, with a tie." She heard her husband shuffle through the hallway toward the kitchen. It was growing darker outside; evening's dim gray light was fading. "I don't know what I'm going to do about supper," Nina said, staring at her now-useless food processor. "I was just going to chop the onions."
