CHAPTER ONE

Kate strode briskly into the empty elevator and punched the "1" as the doors closed.

"Goddamned son of a bitch!" she mumbled under her breath.

The senior partner was, granted, a sexist old fool and she knew it, but by now, he should realize that more than half the graduates of American law schools were women. She was tired of being patronized in staff meetings, tired of being treated like a token child. She knew her job, dammit, and she was good at it!

Kate pursed her lips in frustration and blew her bangs up from over her eyes. The elevator opened up on the opulent lobby of her building, and she marched out through the revolving glass doors into the heat of the city afternoon.

Without a particular goal, she headed up the crowded sidewalk. She'd been warned before taking a job in corporate law at a big firm that traditional ways died hard. She'd thought she could handle the leers and smirks of the old-timers, and usually, she could. But these guys were attorneys! They really ought to know better.

"That's an interesting viewpoint," Lester Harrison had smirked at her at this morning's meeting to discuss a pending case. "And a feminine one, at that. Perhaps if you'd give it some additional thought..."

Kate's colleagues had looked away in embarrassment, and she had blushed furiously in spite of herself. She had remained silent and irate for the rest of the meeting.

Her favorite lingerie shop caught her eye up ahead, and she turned into the cool, pastel-lit entry. A little retail therapy could always do wonders.

An assortment of camisoles and panties attracted her attention, and she was fingering the soft lace of a silk slip when a clerk greeted her.

"Welcome to Angela's," the young blond woman said smoothly. "Is there anything in particular we can help you with today?"

"No, thanks," Kate answered automatically. "I'm just browsing."

"We have some wonderful new bras that have just come in," the clerk responded. "I'd be happy to help you with a fitting, if you're interested."

"I'll think about it," Kate said, smiling politely, then turned back to the rack. A bra fitting, she thought. It was something she'd never done. It seemed too intimate, something she was too shy to contemplate.

Kate supposed it had something to do with her self-consciousness about her breast size. She'd been early to develop in junior high school, and the boys had started making comments. Then as she'd matured, she'd been resentful of the girls with smaller breasts, the ones who could go braless, the ones who never had to worry about expensive hardware under their clothes. She resented having to wear tops a size larger than her bottoms, resented the inevitable glances from men on the street.

Some of her reticence, too, had to do with the conservative dress required by her profession, she supposed. A big-city corporate lawyer in her firm had better never show up anywhere dressed in anything less than a pinstriped suit, stockings and closed-toed shoes!

The bras she usually wore were sensible, whites and beiges, pretty but not too enticing. She even sometimes selected minimizers to try to diminish her 36-Cs.

Today, though, her mood was such that she found herself drawn to a display featuring a red lace bra, something she'd never even considered wearing. Next to that mannequin was another in a low-decollete black number.

A bra fitting. Hmmm. She wondered what that would entail.

Kate turned and saw the clerk who had approached her standing behind a nearby register. Hesitantly, she approached the young woman and asked, "Did you say you could help me with a bra fitting?" Kate noticed the woman's name tag: Johanna.

"I'd be happy to help you," Johanna responded. "Is there a particular style you were interested in?"

Kate indicated the mannequins she'd been looking at. "Some of these styles are interesting. Though they're nothing like what I usually wear."

"Let's have some fun trying things on then," Johanna answered. "What size do you usually wear?"

"I'm a 36-C--I think," Kate responded, feeling her cheeks color ever so slightly.

"I'll bring in several," Johanna suggested. "We'll try some 34-Ds and some 38-Bs for a comparison, all right?" The young woman smiled, and her teeth were beautifully white against her tan, Kate noticed. "Let me show you to a dressing room while I select some things."

"Thank you," Kate murmured, wondering if she'd made a choice she'd regret. She followed Johanna to the dressing rooms in the back of the store and went into one of the beautifully decorated little spaces.

"I'll check back with you in a few minutes," Johanna said, closing the door.

So now what do I do? Kate wondered. She started by taking off her tailored black suit jacket and hanging it on the rack in the corner. She wore a sheer silk tank with a lacy camisole underneath and, after a moment's hesitation, decided to remove them both. She stood before the mirror in her white bra and black suit skirt, feeling decidedly self-conscious.

"May I come in?" she heard Johanna ask.

"Yes," Kate answered softly.

Johanna entered the cubicle with four padded black hangers, each displaying a lavishly designed bra in a vivid color. She hung them on the rack and turned toward Kate, tugging a tape measure from around her neck. "May I?" she asked.

Kate nodded mutely, feeling painfully shy.

"Raise your arms over your head," Johanna said softly, "and I'll measure around your ribcage."

Obediently, Kate lifted her arms, and Johanna slid the soft measure around her, just under her breasts. "Thirty-one inches," Johanna said. "That means a 36 is probably just about right for you. Now I need to measure around the fullest part."

Kate blinked, but continued to hold her arms aloft. Johanna slipped the tape measure around Kate's nipples, and to her astonishment and embarrassment, Kate felt her nipples harden. "That's thirty-nine inches, so a C-cup is probably what you need."

Johanna removed the tape measure, and Kate tried willing her nipples to shrink.

"We have some styles that are lined to cover up when you're cold," Johanna said, as she removed a cobalt blue bra from its hanger.

Cold! Kate thought. So Johanna had noticed the "raisins on her cookies." Kate wondered if her physical response was a typical one.

"I'll let you try this one on and come back in a few minutes."

As Johanna left, Kate looked down at herself and thought that her nipples had never looked harder. In a rush, she unfastened her bra and caught sight of her distended areolas in the mirror. Quickly, she bent over to lower herself into the blue "lined for when you're cold" selection, fastened it and adjusted her nipples into it. There, she thought. At least they aren't showing now.

"How are you doing?" she heard Johanna ask from outside the door.

"Fine," Kate answered in a small voice that she didn't recognize as her own. "Come in."

Johanna entered and Kate stood up tall as if on display. Johanna tilted her pretty head to one side and looked at the fit appraisingly.

"It looks as if it's right," she said. "Is it comfortable?"

"Yes, it feels fine," Kate answered, eager now to make her purchase and depart. Was that wetness she was feeling between her stockinged, conservatively pantied legs?

"I think I'll take this one today. I really have to get back to the office."

"Good," Johanna answered, pleased. "I know you'll enjoy it. When you're ready, come out front, and one of the girls will wrap it up for you."

"I think I'll wear it and let you wrap up my old one."

Johanna smiled. Then she disappeared.
