eBook Description: Nothing much had happened in the five years since the war with Chaos. They had won, just, but their homeworld had been the price--placed into stasis to prevent any repetition. Self-exiled to Earth, only a few of the survivors could now make the transformation back into the physical world and that was only to support Arielle with her annual Spring thing--it kept the place ticking over nicely, but was not essential. This was no future for any of them and underneath they all knew it. They were merely in their own form of stasis. Until, Dee dropped her bombshell. For some time she'd had that awful feeling that a tap had been left running back home. She could not shake it from her mind. Something had gone very wrong and the horror was that she herself had set this in motion. Playing it over and over was not the answer; she had to find out for sure. Surya agreed, sanctioning Ion, Cappella and Dee to make a simple there and back, fact finder trip. But it was not going to be quite that simple. Surya had been waiting for any excuse to act. She gave Cappella a single momentous thought which would send her on a mission of her own. It was a long shot, but they both wanted to know something else; if it might just be possible for them to go home, to make a return to Olympus. The sequel to The Kronos Factor.

Ion was on her feet. "There is no way, Dee. No way you are going back there. Cappella, tell her."

"What are you even thinking? Ion's right, not a chance."

"So, you're both happy that everything's alright?"

Cappella dismissed her crisps with a flick of the hand and got to her feet. "Of course not. But if anyone should go back it's me." As she said it there was a truth which she recognised. Hidden away in the back of her mind among the terrors was a simple need to go back. Something which said that there may indeed be some future. It irritated her to think their time, as Annaise had so forcefully put it, was over. Why should a million years of continuity, generation after generation, end with them, here, locked away on this little planet. Yes, locked. And to top it all, the inhabitants of this 'little planet' had no notion of what had been done to protect them. Merging into the landscape had seemingly been the only way out. It did have its advantages, but they were as much in stasis as Olympus. Where was the future in that? Only nine of them could still make the change to the physical world anyway. That did not come close to making a viable future. Even Lupercal itself, once the home of the seasons on Earth, was now nothing more that a symbolic focus for them.

Ion had also been thinking. "Who knows what's happened. If nothing, then, by going back, we actually break the stasis. How could we then tell? As far as I'm concerned we're best leaving it well alone. Nothing has happened to suggest that Lupercal would be in any danger, even if Annaise did get loose."

Dee was still adamant. "Whatever anyone says, I have to know. I'll go. If there's any change, I'll just stop it again, then come straight back. Simple."

Cappella wanted a timeout. Ion and Dee headed into to the garden to continue exploring the repercussions. Cappella mooched around the room opening draws, cupboards, looking for nothing. Her necklace was still on the table, still flanked by the two small pebbles--despite Ion's ferocious dusting routine. She picked it up. It was the first time she had touched it in, how many years? How many goddesses had worn this? It had once belonged to Arielle. Before her? And before that? She placed it back around her neck, bringing the two celestial dragon clasps together behind, allowing their tails to coil down between her breasts. Flowers and dragons. There was an undeniable feeling of potential. A hidden truth surfaced. Cappella was now clear on one point--there might be some sort of a future, and for some strange reason it was back on Olympus.
